Rose Marie Davis Huggler Anthrop, 72, of West Point, died at 9:47 a.m. Sunday, April 15, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette. She was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Ohio, to the late Lawrence Davis and Hazel Cook. She was a graduate of Wea High School. Her marriage was to Edwin E. Anthrop Sr. on Nov. 12, 1949, in Lafayette. He survives.
Mrs. Anthrop was a homemaker who had worked as a furniture refinisher and at the West Point store. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, horse racing (see below), computers and playing poker and euchre.
Surviving with her husband are two sons, Edwin E. "Butch" Anthrop Jr. (wife: Mona) of Brookston and George Anthrop (companion: Susan Spieldenner) of Marshall, Mich.; two daughters, Carolyn Anthrop of Lafayette and Jayne Clinton (husband: Greg) of Berea, Ky.; two brothers, Jerry Huggler of Independence and Fred Huggler of Apple Valley, Calif.; and a sister, Betty McCloud (husband: Ed) of Orient, Ohio.
Mrs. Anthrop's greatest joy came from her 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. She was preceded by a sister and her stepfather, Shorty Huggler.
From the 1970s to 1990s, Standardbred horses bred by the Anthrop Family were given names which included the moniker West Point. The name forever tied the horses to the family, residing in West Point, Indiana. For several years, horses like West Point Rick, West Point Baron, and West Point Ann could be found racing at the Indiana fairs and beyond. The filly named West Point Rose was likely named in honor of Mrs. Anthrop.
The Anthrops are still active in harness racing, with horses currently competing at Hoosier Park. On opening night, Joddi's Bye raced at the Anderson, Indiana, racetrack. Casino Charlie also finished second in a claiming event on Saturday, April 14.
Visitation & Rosary were held on Tuesday, April 17, with a Funeral Mass held on Wednesday, April 18.
