Luella M. Barnes (1917 - 2003)

Luella M. Barnes, 86, of Shelbyville, Indiana, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Heritage House Convalescent Center.  Born February 28, 1917, in Greenfield, Indiana, she was the daughter of James Edward and Minnie Maude (Wiggins) Martin.  She married Edward R. Barnes on December 15, 1936.  He preceded her in death on February 3, 1995.  Survivors include two daughters, Janet Bozzelli (Indiana Horse Racing Commission Member) of Indianapolis and Mrs. Clarence (Marlene) Fritz of Shelbyville; one son, Harold (Kay) Barnes of Shelbyville; one brother, James A. Martin of Richland, Washington; nine grandchildren (including driver Brian Barnes); and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Martin.  Mrs. Barnes had been employed with Indiana National Bank and then with Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles for 10 years, retiring in 1977.  She was a member of Curry Chapel Methodist Church in Greenfield and Shelby County Horsemen Association.  She had a lifetime of involvement in harness training and racing.  Ed & Luella Barnes were inducted into the Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame in 1998.  Breed Development Late Closer IS-24, for Indiana-sired 3 YR Old Colt Pacers, was named in their honor.  The final for the event will be held on May 30th, at Hoosier Park.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 19th, with Rev. George Henninger officiating.  She was laid to rest in Forest Hill Cemetery, located near the Shelby County Fairgrounds.  Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby County Horsemen Association, in care of Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S.
