Violet M. "Vi" Blocker, 87, dies

Violet M. Blocker, 87, of Greencroft Blvd.,
Goshen, Indiana, died unexpectedly and peacefully at home on April 26,
2007.
A funeral service celebrating her life was held on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in the First English Lutheran Church with Pastor Gene Hollingsworth
officiating. Interment was at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury, with
Robert Wilson, Chuck Immel, Chris Immel, Thad Immel, Ed Kinney and Kegan Shriver
serving as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Violet was born December 19, 1919, in Greeley, Colorado, to Huston D. and Anna
Hazel (Pfeiffer) Mather. She was a 1936 graduate of Jefferson High School and
attended Goshen College. On December 7, 1952, she married Dr. Charles E.
Jeffries, DDS, in Wolf Lake, Indiana. He died September 5, 1961.
On August 30, 1964, in Goshen First United Methodist Church, Vi married Joe C.
Blocker who survives.
Vi’s working career included being employed as a teller at the Farm Bureau
Credit Union, a sales clerk at Newell’s, teller at Salem Bank and assisting her
husband Joe with the day-to-day running of the Blocker-Harris Funeral Home. She
was also secretary to Joe when he served as Elkhart Township Trustee and also
secretary with the Maple City Movers.
Vi loved the Elkhart County 4-H Fair and was active with the
4-H Fair Harness
Racing Program and active with her husband
with the Harness Racing Breeders. She was a member of the First English Lutheran
Church early on having been baptized into the church on Dec. 5, 1926, by Rev.
Paul M. Brosy.
Many will remember Vi at her favorite lunching spot: “The Olympia” having lunch
and fellowship with friends. Above all, Vi loved her family. A stranger to none,
a friend to all, “Nana” will be missed.
Besides her husband, survivors include her two daughters, Nancy (Chuck) Immel,
of New Paris, Jennifer Rodabaugh of Elkhart; a son Robert L. Wilson of Goshen;
two stepdaughters, Kathy (Larry) Smith of Kingsly, Mich., Jeanne Ann (George)
Peed of Sellersburg, Ind.; one brother Charles J. (Audrey) Mather of Nappanee;
11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Violet was preceded in death by her stepmother, Mildred Mather in 1982; a
brother, Theodore DeFreese Mather, a great-grandson, Joshua David Richards in
November, 2004, and a granddaughter, Tonya Gail Walker Martinez.
