Alberta Ewart, 101, dies

Alberta Ewart, 101, the mother of former Scioto Downs and Indiana Downs racing secretary Jim Ewart, died on June 15, 2007 in Greenup, Ill., where she had lived her entire life.

For 62 years she lived in the same house and her front porch was visited by everyone.  Mrs. Ewart attended Millikin and became a beloved 2nd grade teacher at Cumberland Elementary.  She married Herman O. Ewart on August 9th 1925 and together they raised two sons, Howard and James.  Mrs. Ewart was a very active member of the Greenup Presbyterian church, the Women's Civic Club, Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. For decades, she collected hundreds of eyeglasses for the needy and soup labels for Kemmerer Village, a children's home.  She loved all kinds of needle work, sewing and quilting.  Mrs. Ewart was a special grandmother to 6, great-grandmother to 8 and aunt Alberta to many.

She was also the sister of racing executives John Genuine and Preston H. “Pres” Jenuine. The latter served as a member of the U.S. Trotting Association Board of Directors for nearly 30 years.
