Marvin D. “Dutch” High, 77, dies
Marvin D. “Dutch” High, age 77, of 1177 West Arch Street in Portland, Indiana, died Monday, May 21, 2007, at his residence. He was born in Ohio City, Ohio, on June 28, 1929, the son of Daniel A. and Reah (Bevington) High. He was married March 11, 1951 to Dorothy Long, who survives. Mr. High was a Live Stock buyer for Heinhold. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Active in Harness Racing, Mr. High as an owner, trainer, breeder, and driver. He was a member of the Jayland Trotting Association, Mercer County Harness Horsemen’s Association, and American Legion in Ohio City.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy; Three sons: Paul High of Portland, Tim High of Portland, and Kevin High of Toledo, Ohio; One daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Lake of Portland; Two sisters: Betty Amweg of VanWert, Ohio and Pat Lighthill of Celina, Ohio; Three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Kay, and two brothers and one sister.
The High Family has been involved in harness racing for many years, with sons Tim and Kevin following their father into the business. Mr. High was always active in helping with events at the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland, highlighted by their annual auction. Tim is the current President of the Jayland Trotting Association.
Living near the Indiana-Ohio border, the Highs took advantage of the racing opportunities offered in both states. Their horses have competed at a number of pari-mutuel tracks, including Hoosier Park, Raceway Park, and Lebanon Raceway. In addition, they often raced in both the Indiana and Ohio fair events. Some notable horses campaigned by the Highs were Stately Prince; Hezatrottinmachine, 5,1:59 ($62,543); and Imabuckarootoo, 7,Q,1:59 ($49,023), whose likeness will be pictured on Mr. High's tombstone.
