Ernie Loy, 67, passes away

Ernie Loy, 67, of Portland, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004, following a fight with cancer.  Ernie was an important player in the Jayland Trotting Association.  For many years, one of his duties was taking care of the Winner's Circle presentations.  He was also a past Speed Superintendent for the races at Portland.  His niece, Jane Ann (Greg) Runyon, carries on the family connection to the races in  Jay County.  Mr. Loy was an auctioneer, donating his time for the Jayland Trotting Association's annual tack auction.  He spent the day at this year's auction (February 7th) and was able to sell for about 30 minutes - something he had not done since his last surgery in December.  This year's auction was a huge success, with more consignors than ever.  His kids think he kept himself going just so he could do this year's auction, which was one of his favorite things.  Mr. Loy will be missed by everyone involved in racing at Portland and all of his friends in the Standardbred community.  Please keep the family of Ernie Loy in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.  Cards may be sent to his son, Doug Loy, at: 1417 N  800 E, Portland IN  47371.
