Cecil A. Peacock,
82, Anderson, died
May 24, 2005,
in Greenfield, Indiana, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 29,
1922, in Scott County, the son of Delmar and M. Opal (Keith) Peacock.
A longtime employee of Hoosier Park and a harness horseman, Peacock worked on
the track maintenance crew at Hoosier Park for the past six years during both
the harness racing season and the Thoroughbred meet. He was visible as
one of the tractor drivers on the track between races each evening.
Prior to his job in track maintenance, Peacock served as the horsemen's
representative for the Standardbred horsemen. A native of the Greenfield,
Indiana area and a graduate of Maxwell High School, Peacock was a farmer that
delved into harness racing and loved training horses. He was best known
for training Abercrombie during the early stages of his career. Peacock
was also once employed at Mellowwood Farms in New Palestine, Indiana.
In addition to his harness racing ties, Peacock was a member of the Maxwell
United Methodist Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Greenfield,
Indiana, the Independent Order of Foresters, and the U.S. Trotting
Association. He also served in the United States Army during World War
II.
Peacock is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lillian (Burnham) Peacock.
He is also survived by one son, Darin Peacock of Bennington, and three
daughters, Jean Fee of New Palestine, Jane Grose of Greenfield, and Dana
Taphorn of Anderson. Peacock's brother, Chester (Noblesville,
Indiana) and a sister, Wilma Johnson (Greenfield, Indiana), are also still
living. Peacock had 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delmar Peacock; mother, M. Opal
(Keith) Peacock; and three sisters, Norene Willits, Paulene Wallsmith and
Martha Kreienbrink.
Services were held at the Pasco-Stillinger Funeral Home in Greenfield, Ind.
Friday, May 27. Burial was held at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hancock Memorial
Hospital Hospice.
