Dorothy Rose, 79, passes away

 

Dorothy P. Rose, 79, of Connersville went home to be with the Lord at 8:00 a.m. December 8, 2006, at Lincoln Center in Connersville.  She was born February 23, 1927, in Spiceland where she spent most of her life.  She was the daughter of the late Glen R. Brown and Ruth Marie (Bussel) Brown.  She married Ralph Jennings Rose, April 8, 1950, in New Castle.  They had four children, Mark J. Rose (Cindy) of Greensburg, Scott H. Rose, Sandra L Rose and Traci Y. Rose of Spiceland.  She was a member of Fairview Christian Church.

 

She worked in the cafeteria of Grandview Elementary School in Connersville during the 1970’s.  Dorothy was known as the “Hoosier Historian” for Standardbreds due to her broad knowledge of history of the sport of harness racing.  She and her husband raised and trained many harness race horses.  They redeveloped the lineage of “Single G”.  She is a former president of the “Single G” Memorial Association.  She was on the original board of directors for the Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame.  In 1998, she and her husband were inducted into the Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame.  In 2002, Dorothy was selected as an “Unsung Hero in Harness Racing,” by the USTA and Hoof Beats.  She was a feature writer for the Hoosier Horse Review.  She was a published poet and authoress under the pen name of “Scheherazade”.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Scott.  Survivors include her husband and children as well as three grandchildren, Kris Robbins (Robyn) Statesville, NC, April Riggs (Richard) Markelville, and Cody Phillips, Connersville.

 

Services were held on Monday, December 11 in New Castle.  In lieu of flowers, the family requested contributions be made to organizations that support needy children during the Christmas season.
