Alvin "Jay" Swartzentruber, 55, dies

Alvin Jay Swartzentruber, 55, died at 7:16 a.m. Sunday, October 21, 2007, at Jasper Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

Born November 3, 1951, in Daviess County, he was the son of Cleadus and Clara (Stoll) Swartzentruber.

He was a farmer and natural-born horseman and farrier.  He was a member of the Old Order Amish church.

He is survived by his wife, M. Lorene (Marner) Swartzentruber, whom he married March 16, 1972; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Norman Jay and Dorcas Swartzentruber of Arcola, Ill., Joseph Lee and Lorene Swartzentruber, Leroy Dale Swartzentruber, John Alvin Swartzentruber, and Larry Wayne and Angela Swartzentruber, all of Montgomery; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Delmar Wittmer and Joyce Marlene and Jeff Wagler, all of Montgomery, Ruth Ann and Kevin Knepp of Odon and Karen Sue and Daniel Lengacher of Plainville; his mother, Clara Swartzentruber of Montgomery; four brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Betty Swartzentruber, Cleadus Jr. and Mildred Swartzentruber, Eli and Rachel Swartzentruber and Marvin and Delilah Swartzentruber, all of Montgomery; seven sisters and six brothers-in-law, Wilma and Amos Wittmer and Eva and Mervin Wagler, all of Montgomery, Marilyn and Simon Wagler and Rose and Mark Graber, all of Odon, Barbara (late Eugene) Marner of Plainville, Betty and Floyd Yoder of Kentucky and Evelyn and Joe Knepp of Cannelburg; and 24 grandchildren, Corey, Austin, Matthew, Tyson, Vernon, Brandon, Jerald, Tiffany, Steven, Timothy and Grace Swartzentruber, Christan, Roselyn and Donovan Wittmer, Kaitlyn, Andrew, Chad, Valerie and Trevor Wagler, Kendrich and Rhonda Knepp and Alex, Lance and Luke Lengacher.

Preceding him in death were his father; brothers, Ernest and Raymond and sisters, Mary Ruth, Linda and Lisa.

Over the years, Swartzentruber's farm as been the home of several Indiana stallions.  Ericson Hanover, Le Black Cat, Delphi's Oracle, Einstein, and more recently Saint Nick Hanover, among others, have stood at the Montgomery facility.
