April Health Note - Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) & Coggins Test
EIA is a viral disease causing a progressive decrease in the number of red blood cells, leading to weakness. Spread through biting insects, diagnosis is made via a blood test called a "Coggins" test. Blood to be tested must be drawn by a licensed veterinarian for submission to an approved laboratory. There is no treatment and no cure for EIA. Management at racetracks, sales, and commercial breeding farms usually require a negative Coggins test. Consult your local veterinarian for the test requirements for your state or the state in which you are traveling. April Health Note - Skin Problem Transmission
Preventing the transmission of skin problems and other diseases is especially important in barns housing multiple horses, particularly if tack and grooming supplies are shared among different horses. The simple act of disinfecting tack and grooming supplies, between each use, can be helpful in preventing potential contamination.
