May Health Note - Health Certificate

When planning your next trip with a horse, be sure to consult the event or farm manager of the destination and your local veterinarian to find out if a health certificate is necessary.  Your veterinarian has been accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture to examine your horse and produce a document verifying its health status.  A health certificate is usually valid for 30 days and should accompany the horse, along with a current negative Coggins test (see the April Health Note).  For more Horse Health Information, visit the Web site of the American Association of Equine Practitioners at www.MyHorseMatters.com.

May Health Note - Changing Feed

When making a change in the horse's diet, introduce the new feed in small amounts.  Add no more than half a cup of the new feed on the first day, divided among the day's feedings.  Gradually increase the amount in small increments over a period of ten days to two weeks.  For more Horse Health Information, visit the Web site of the American Association of Equine Practitioners at www.MyHorseMatters.com.  This site contains information pertinent to your horse's health and more.
