Hoosier Horses take 5 of 14 events on Northfield Card

Indiana-sired horses made their presence known at Northfield Park on Monday, December 4, 2006.  On a cold night in Cleveland, horses sired by stallions registered in Indiana won five of the fourteen events for the evening.  Each winner was sired by a different Indiana stallion.

The first Indiana representative scoring a win came in the fifth race.  Martin Yoder's Hoosier Tiger (VP Finance) benefited from a two-hole trip to cross the wire first in a time of 1:57.1.  The four-year-old gelding was driven by Ryan Stahl.

Five races later, Jug Fever (Long Ago Blue Chip) was also a winner.  Trainer/Driver Andy Shetler left from the three hole and remained parked to the quarter in :28.  The gelding then took control of the race and was never collared.  The winning time for the victory in the tenth race was 1:57.2.

Patrons would only have to wait for the next event to see another Indiana horse in the winner's circle.  To-shine Joe (Safety Patrol) survived a first over journey to win the eleventh race.  The winning time was 1:57.3, with trainer/driver Bruce Sturgeon aboard.  This three-year-old gelding is co-owned by Mark Laffin, who stables at both racetracks in Indiana during the racing season.

After sitting out the next race, the spotlight was back on Indiana when Cactus D (Storm Damage) went wire to wire in 1:59 to win the thirteenth race.  Trained and driven by Willie Schwartz, Cactus D is owned by Mike Wamsley, Mark Heath, Glen Alexander, and Donald Liebschutz, all of Indiana.

The final race on the card was also won by a Hoosier horse.  Wondering Yet (Lease On Life) endured being parked for the first quarter from post position seven, before going on to win the race in 2:00.3.  The promising sophomore is conditioned by Mark Deaton.  Owner Elliott Deaton was in the sulky for the win to close out the night.
