Townline
Lily still reigns as Pompano's pacing queen
Saturday,
October 28, 2006 - Steve Wolf, Pompano Park marketing
For the second straight week, Townline
Lily ($3.80) showed
she is the current reigning queen of the mares at Pompano Park Friday, winning
the fifth race $10,000 Open Handicap with a game closing effort in 1:54.2.
Driven by Bruce Ranger, Townline Lily switched racing style and came from off
the pace Friday, getting second-over cover and then tipping three-wide on the
final turn before blowing by the field in the stretch to win by three-quarters
of a length over Asian Paradise N (Marc Aubin) and Chip And Gale A (David
Ingraham).
The race started off with Hyde Park Hussie N (Mickey McNichol) taking the early
lead with Evere’s Connection (Wally Hennessey) in the two-hole, but that was
short lived at the opening quarter mile in :27.2 as Hennessey pulled quickly on
the right line and went to the front. But Tintabella N and driver Daryl Bier
came first-over and they took command before the half mile in :55.4.
Then Chip And Gale A came first-over in the backstretch with Townline Lily
coming up with the live second-over journey until she made her move on the final
turn with Asian Paradise N sweeping four-wide.
It was the tenth win this year for Townline Lily,
a 5-year-old mare by Pilgrims Punch,
trained by Tom Beckette for the Bruce Ranger Stable and owned by Mike and Arthur
Biel of Tamarac.
Welu’s Dreamboat and driver Anthony Napolitano try for their third straight win
in Saturday’s second race $10,000 Open Handicap Pace at Pompano Park. The
stellar 5-year-old gelding by Camluck has won four of his last six starts, all
in the Open class and is the 7-5 favorite from post seven.
Last week Welu’s Dreamboat led from start to finish by one length in 1:51.4 for
his ninth victory on the season for trainer Jacques Dupuis and the Matty J
Racing Stable of Deerfield Beach.
Saturday night Pompano Park will host its annual Halloween Bash for children.
The event takes place starting at 7:00 p.m. with a costume contest for children
ages 1 to 12 with a free bicycle given away in four age groups. There are also
“goodie bags” of candy for the first 100 children to attend along with clowns,
free mini golf, a free caricature artist and a special appearance by the Pompano
Park mini horses.
